Gateway NV79C48u Laptop with an Intel Core i3 Processor Review
The Gateway laptop (Model: NV79C48u) features an Intel® Core™ i3 processor, a 17.3″ display and Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium.
This laptop is powered by the Intel Core i3-370M CPU. It’s a 64-bit, dual-core processor running at 2.4 GHz. It has 4 processing threads and 3MB of cache. It was built on a 32nm process and uses 35W. This laptop comes with 4GB DDR3 memory and can be expanded to a maximum of 8GB. That’s plenty of memory for multi-tasking apps.
The display is a 17.3″ TFT-LCD high-definition widescreen display with a resolution of 1600×900. The screen uses LED backlight for lower power consumption. The screen is driven by Mobile Intel HD Graphics with 64MB-128MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. This is not the laptop you want, if you want to play today’s games at their highest resolutions.
For storage you get a 500GB Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive rotating at 5400RPM. A nice size drive that should hold all your music, movies, digital photos and more. The optical drive is a multiformat DVD±RW/CD-RW drive with double-layer support. The digital media reader is a multi-in-1 digital media reader supports Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and xD-Picture Card formats.
On the networking side you get a built-in 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN adapter accessible through the RJ-45 port. Nice to see Gigabit in a laptop like this. For wireless you get a standard 802.11b/g/n adapter for connecting to all those wireless hotspots or your own home wireless network.
External ports include 3 high-speed USB 2.0 ports, 1 VGA port for connecting to an external monitor, 1 HDMI port for connecting to your HDTV, 1 headphone-out jack and 1 microphone-in jack. This laptop also comes with a built-in 1.3 MP HD webcam that supports resolutions up to 1280×1024.
This laptop comes installed with Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit Edition. Other software includes Cyberlink® PowerDVD™ & Nero 9 Essentials, Adobe® Reader®, Adobe® Flash® Reader, Gateway MyBackup Solution, Gateway Recovery Management, Norton Internet Security™ 2010 (60-day trial) and Microsoft® Office Starter 2010.
This laptop comes with a 6-Cell Lithium-Ion (4400 mAh) battery pack that can provide up to 4 hours of unplugged power. The laptop measures 16.3″x10.8″x1.4″ and weighs a hefty 7.3 pounds.
